Message of the Vice Chancellor
It is with great honor and profound responsibility that I assume the role of Vice Chancellor of the Buddhist and Pali University of Sri Lanka. This esteemed institution, with its rich history and deep commitment to the study of Buddhist philosophy, Pali, and related disciplines, stands as a beacon of wisdom and spiritual growth in Sri Lanka and the world.
The Buddhist and Pali University of Sri Lanka is established in terms of the Act of Parliament No.74 of 1981 and the amended Act of Parliament No.37 of 1995 of the Democratic Socialistic Republic of Sri Lanka; especially with the purpose of produce erudite Dhammadūthās and scholars, accomplished in the knowledge of studying Buddhadhamma, the Pali Language and allied subjects.
The Buddhist and Pali University is home to three core faculties: the Faculty of Buddhist Studies, the Faculty of Language Studies, and the Faculty of Graduate Studies. Each faculty plays a crucial role in fulfilling our mission. The Faculty of Buddhist Studies offering students the opportunity to deeply explore Buddhist philosophy, doctrine, culture, and ethics. The Faculty of Language Studies plays a pivotal role in connecting the world through language. Not only does it teach local languages such as Sinhala and Tamil, but it also offers programs in a variety of foreign languages, including English, Japanese, Korean, and Hindi. The Faculty of Graduate Studies offers advanced academic programs in the form of P.G.D, Master’s (MA), MPhil, and PhD degrees in many fields like Buddhist studies, English and etc. It is internationally famous among the students and the researchers.
I am deeply committed to the well-being of our university community. We will continue to build a learning environment that is rooted in the principles of mindfulness, compassion, and respect for all beings. This is not just a place of study; it is a space for transformation, where knowledge is cultivated, wisdom is nurtured, and ethical leadership is formed.
The Chancellor is the Chief of the University and he chairs the convocation ceremony of the University. The present Chancellor of the University is Most Venerable Warakagoda Sri Gnanarathana Mahanayaka Thero – The Mahanayaka Thero of the Asgiri Chapter of the Siam Nikaya.
