The institution follows traditional Buddhist titles, with ‘Mahāmahōpādhyāya’ serving as the equivalent of Chancellor. As stipulated in the Act of Venerable Walpola Rahula Thero, the Mahāmahōpādhyāya’ title rotates every two years among the Mahanayaka Theros of the Tri-Nikāya. The first Mahāmahōpādhyāya title was granted to the Mahā Nāyaka of the Malwathu Chapter,

The Chancellor is the Chief of the University and he chairs the convocation ceremony of the University. The present Chancellor of the University is Most Venerable Warakagoda Sri Gnanarathana Mahanayaka Thero – The Mahanayaka Thero of the Asgiri Chapter of the Siam Nikaya.
