Introduction to the Department
The Department of Sinhala is one of the major departments in the Faculty of Language Studies. We offer honours and general degrees at the bachelor’s level and MA, MPhil, and PhD degrees. For those who aspire to start from the very beginning, the department also offers certificate-level programmes.

The Department of Sinhala is one of the pioneering departments in this unique and partially dedicated university for language studies. The department has been immensely contributing to the whole university to enhance the language skills of all aspects of the majority’s mother tongue in Sri Lanka while operating as a centre of excellence. The department invites authentically inspired local and foreign candidates to join us to go on a journey which is interesting, ambitious and dynamic.

Department History
The Department of Sinhala was started in 1997, and its first head was retired senior professor E. A. Wickrmasinghe.

The department has set up a Sinhala society, which is led by undergraduates and monitored by the academic staff. The society organises several annual volunteer events.
