Introduction to the Department

The Department of Religious Studies and Comparative Philosophy at the Buddhist and Pali University of Sri Lanka promotes academic excellence in the study of world religions, philosophy, and inter-religious harmony. The department offers degree programs, research opportunities, and activities that nurture global graduates committed to peace, tolerance, and intellectual inquiry. The Department of Religious Studies and Comparative Philosophy is affiliated with the faculty of Buddhist Studies. Two scopes namely religions and philosophy are there with the well-planed curriculums of academic purposes.

The Department at BPU (Buddhist and Pali University of Sri Lanka) is significant due to the fact that, majority of local and foreign students mostly prefers to study subject areas of religions and philosophies. There is a reason for that tendency e.i. the subject of religious studies is one of the most important key ways to the resolution of human conflicts. When the peace, harmony and affluence are taken into consideration, it cannot be acquired with the absence of the understanding of varieties of religious ideologies. Accordingly, the Department related to Buddhist and Pali University of Sri Lanka is a leading light for the consolation of human mind endowed with mental tranquility and suitable balance of the social life.

The Department of Religious Studies and Comparative Philosophy is an unneglectable part of the university of BPU. This is the one and only Department separated for the investigation of ideological teaching in the realm of universities in Sri Lanka. It does not imply that there is no any university to study religious teachings in Sri Lanka. However, there is a specific opportunity to study religious teaching outcomes for beginners of religious studies as undergraduates and degree holders in this Department.

Under the authority of the graduate profile, one is in the position to study most important areas related to the scope of religious tenets in the world. For instances, there are Historical Approaches to Academic Study of Religion, Science and Religion, Prescribed Eastern and Western Religious Texts (textual interpretations), Alternative Religions, Mythology and Tribal Regions and Religion and Contemporary Issues etc. This is the one and only place which pluralistic cultural heritages can be studied. It is so essential in connection with miscellaneous modern social background. Just because of the threefold reason, such as power, money and sex, the modern man has embroiled in bloody conflicts. That is why even was like the war Gaza strips, the war between Israel and Palestine and so forth.

As human beings, we have to console the human mind conveying peace and harmony towards society with the sake of well-grounded social platform. In that sense, the Department of Religious Studies and Comparative Philosophy has a duty and responsibility to dedicate on behalf of the society. That inherent responsibility is to socialize understanding of religious values and essence. The human has to venerate others faiths and beliefs irrespective of caste, creed, race and political affiliations because this world must be a better place to live for all of us. The Department of Religious Studies and Comparative Philosophy-BPU has contributed three Deans and two Vice-chancellors to the academic field endowed aspirations above mentioned.
