As someone who has been part of this department’s journey from its early days, I take great pride in sharing its growth and accomplishments with you. Established in 2016, the Department of Language Skills Development has swiftly become one of the largest at the university, offering Bachelor of Arts degree programs and a range of certificate and diploma courses in Tamil, Hindi, Chinese, Japanese, Korean, and French.
Our story began when these languages were taught as internal certificate courses under the Department of Sinhala. The creation of our own department allowed us to expand these offerings to the degree level, reflecting our commitment to academic excellence and global relevance.
Supported by a dedicated and highly qualified academic staff, we focus on empowering students with strong language skills, preparing them for international opportunities, and contributing to the global dissemination of Buddhist teachings.
With a clear vision to become a leading center for language education among Buddhist universities worldwide, we continue to innovate and grow. I warmly invite you to discover the opportunities we offer and be part of our vibrant academic community.

Department History
The Department of Language Skills Development was established in 2016, with Tamil, Hindi, Chinese, Japanese, Korean, and French as its primary subjects. Previously, these languages were offered as internal certificate courses under the Department of Sinhala. With the formation of a separate department in 2016, these languages were elevated to degree-level programs. The department’s first head was Senior Lecturer Dr. Nirosha Salwathura. Despite being one of the youngest departments at the university, it has rapidly grown to become one of the largest.
